Mostafa stepped away from the body. He had seen the Police car parked and watched the person creeping along the breakwater. Slipping silently over the side of the dingy, he'd swum to the iron railings set in the wall and quietly climbed them, coming up behind the intruder. After confirming he was alone, it had been simple to slit his throat, the razor-sharp knife cutting through his jugular and windpipe. The guy had never stood a chance.

They had already removed the steel tool chest container from the wooden crate as well as the six-inch protective layer of lead shot surrounding it, placed there to defeat radiation detection. It now only took two of them to lift the chest into the van. Saif ordered Kourosh and Mostafa to put the body in the dinghy and take it back to the ship. They were to raise anchor and set her steaming due west, with the seacocks open. She would sink within the hour and, as the depths became very deep close inshore, she’d never be found. The bodies were weighted and wouldn’t float. Then they would come back ashore with the four canvas holdalls and meet at the beach further south. In the meantime, he and Fawaz would find somewhere to dump the Police car.

Leaving quickly, within the hour they had met again. The Mehtap was last seen riding low in the water and heading off to a watery grave in almost a thousand feet of water. Saif was driving the van and had followed Fawaz in the Police car up into the hills. They had driven the Police car off a cliff into trees on a deserted road, but unlike in Hollywood, it didn’t explode in a fireball. It just rested there almost entirely obscured from the road. If it were found it would be assumed the Guardia officer had tried to crawl to safety.

Fawaz was driving now and led them up through narrow lanes to the remote farmhouse. Taking the steel chest indoors, Saif posted Kourosh and Mostafa as guards. But no alarms had been raised, and no one showed the slightest interest in the farmhouse.

Saif had been sat reciting the words of the Qur’an for the last thirty minutes: Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your disposal so that you can strike terror into the enemies of Allah.

Over and over he recited this, almost in a trance. Finally, he said 'Brothers, now we sleep. Tomorrow we finish our plans, Insha’Allah.'

The quiet chanting began, 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.'
